Rooftop solar in India is no longer only an installation problem. It is an operations problem. Modules need cleaning. Inverters and isolators need inspection. Waterproofing and cable trays need a person who can walk a defined path without stepping on glass, membranes, or live DC runs.
On a warehouse or factory roof that was never designed as a walkway, that path is often improvised: chequered plate, loose planks, or no path at all. Steel rusts under monsoon standing water and coastal salt. Extra dead load is unwelcome on older RCC or metal decks. Conductive treads next to DC strings and inverters add an avoidable electrical risk.
FRP (fibre-reinforced polymer) moulded grating walkways were developed for chemical plants and wastewater decks for the same reasons they now belong on rooftop PV: corrosion resistance, low weight, built-in slip resistance, and electrical non-conductivity. This article is a specification note for EPCs, plant engineers and procurement teams who need O&M access that lasts the life of the array.

| Requirement on a PV roof | FRP Moulded Grating | Hot-Dip Galvanised Steel | Concrete / Pavers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dead load on the roof | Low | High | Very high |
| Corrosion in monsoon / coastal / industrial air | High resistance (resin + glass) | Zinc depletes; cut edges rust | Surface erosion, cracking |
| Electrical behaviour near DC/AC equipment | Non-conductive | Conductive | Generally neutral |
| Slip resistance | Grit or concave moulded surface | Needs extra coating / serration | Limited when wet |
| Cutting and fitting around arrays | Site-cut with standard tools | Hot work / heavy fabrication | Poor |
| Maintenance over 20–25 years | Largely wash-down | Repaint / replace rusted spans | Settlement and cracks |
These are material properties, not marketing slogans. Glass-fibre + thermoset resin does not rust. Typical industrial FRP grating densities are in the 1.8–2.0 g/cm³ range, well below steel. Fire-retardant grades can be specified to ASTM E84 Class 1 where the project requires it. UV-stabilised resin is mandatory for any outdoor solar walkway in India; unstabilised polyester will chalk.
Most Indian solar walkways use moulded grating, not pultruded bar grating. Moulded panels are isotropic in-plane, easy to cut, and already sold in the narrow widths EPCs use between module rows.
| Parameter | Common Solar-Walkway Range | What to Check |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Moulded FRP grating | Pultruded only if long spans / higher point loads demand it |
| Height | 25 mm or 38 mm | 25 mm is common for pedestrian rooftop paths; 38 mm for longer spans or heavier use |
| Mesh | 38 × 38 mm | Smaller mesh if tools or small parts must not fall through |
| Panel / strip width | Often 270 mm, 310 mm, 425 mm, or cut from 1220 mm stock | Match row spacing; do not force a path that shades modules |
| Surface | Anti-skid grit or concave (meniscus) | Grit is better when the roof is washed with soap; concave is easier to clean |
| Resin | UV-protected isophthalic polyester as baseline; vinyl ester for chemical / coastal plants | Match the atmosphere, not the brochure |
| Colour | Yellow (visibility) or grey | Yellow is standard for safety routes |
| Fire | ASTM E84 Class 1 / project fire spec if required | Do not assume every batch is FR grade |
| Fixing | L-clips, C-clips, M/saddle clips to structure or MMS | Design so clips do not pierce the waterproofing carelessly |
Treat the walkway as a pedestrian + tool path unless the owner will roll a trolley. Ask the grating manufacturer for deflection at the actual support spacing you will use on that roof, not a catalogue span from a factory floor. Rooftop supports are often closer and lighter than industrial beams.
FRP is non-conductive, which is useful around inverters, isolators and string combiners. It does not replace earthing, isolation or lock-out. It only avoids adding a metal walking surface that can become an unintended path.
On industrial and commercial rooftops, proper walkway placement ensures safe access and protects rooftop assets:
Between module rows where cleaning crews walk repeatedly.
From the access stair or hatch to the inverter room and AC/DC isolators.
Along fire/maintenance margins at the array edge, not over the parapet line.
Over membranes (TPO, bitumen, exposed waterproofing) that cannot take repeated footfall.
On ground-mount plants the same grating works for inverter pads, cable trenches and wet process areas, but the structural case is different: weight matters less, span and chemical exposure matter more.
Handrails: Handrails belong wherever a fall hazard exists — roof edges, raised platforms, inverter mezzanines. FRP handrail systems (square posts, base shoes, rails, clamps) are consistent with the same corrosion and non-conductivity logic as the grating. Do not mix a non-conductive walkway with a rusting MS rail if the site is coastal or chemical.

Lifecycle cost is the honest comparison. Steel plate looks cheaper per square metre on day one. After galvanising touch-up, rust at cut edges, and extra structural steel to carry the weight, FRP usually wins on a 15–25 year rooftop plant — especially near the coast, cooling towers, or process vents.

VSL India supports rooftop solar projects with engineered FRP gratings, safety handrails, and solar mounting structures.
For pedestrian O&M on closely supported strips, 25 mm moulded grating is the usual Indian specification. Move to 38 mm if support spacing is wider, if two people plus tools will stand on a short span, or if the owner wants a stiffer feel. Always check deflection at your support spacing.
Not if they sit on designed supports or clips and the edges are detailed. Damage comes from point loads, dragging steel, and walking on the membrane itself. The walkway exists to stop that.
FRP grating is electrically non-conductive, which is an advantage next to DC strings and inverters. It is not a substitute for isolation, earthing, labelling or PPE. Treat the array as live until it is isolated.
Moulded is the default for rooftop solar paths: easier to cut, good two-way strength, standard 38 × 38 mesh. Pultruded grating is for longer spans and heavier industrial platforms.
Yes, wherever a person can fall from height. Walkways control where people step. Handrails control whether they go over the edge.
Rooftop solar only earns its 25-year energy model if people can service it safely. A specified FRP walkway — correct height, resin, surface and fixings — is a small line item that protects modules, membranes, and maintenance crews. Steel and improvised planks solve the first visit; they do not solve the monsoon, the salt air, or the fifth year of O&M.
If you are designing or retrofitting access on an industrial or C&I rooftop plant, ask for a walkway take-off (widths, spans, clip type, resin grade) before the array is packed edge-to-edge. VSL India can support that take-off from its FRP grating, handrail and solar-structure range. Contact the team via www.vslindia.com.
